Description of the Graduate Program
The overall research interest of the Graduate Program "Formations of the Global" are constructions of "worlds" from the perspectives of media and communication studies, history, literary and cultural studies and linguistics. The key concepts "Welterfahrungen - Weltentwürfe - Weltöffentlichkeiten" encompass the social, political, and economic mechanisms and agents of transboundary formations of identity and groups. Furthermore, they cover particular descriptions of the heterogeneous, homogeneous, or hybrid phenomena of cultural globalization, as well as designs and projects of the "global", and, finally, the normative orientations of transgressive identities as well as their demarcations.
At the same time, the Graduate Program serves as a research platform networking the program's graduate students, members of the university's School of Humanities, and well-established researchers in the program's three core areas of research (media and communication studies, history, literary and cultural studies and linguistics).
- Focus on Media and Communication Studies
- Focus on History (from the Middle Ages to Contemporary History)
- Focus on Literary and Cultural Studies and Linguistics (with a special emphasis on English, American and Romance Studies)
Unfortunately the Graduate Program 'Formations of the Global' does not allocate new scholarships. If you are interested in PhD studies at the University of Mannheim please find more information here. Or get in contact with Claudia Brendel (Secretary of the School of Humanities).
